Production of drinking water
The core business of Severomoravské vodovody a kanalizace Ostrava is production and supply of drinking water as well as discharge and treatment of wastewater. 95% of drinking water is produced from the central resources, which are managed by the Odra River Basin Authority, in three main water treatment plants: in Podhradí u Vítkova, Nová Ves u Frýdlantu nad Ostravicí and in Vyšní Lhoty near Frýdek-Místek. Raw water is taken from the Kružberk Dam in the foothills of the Jeseníky Mountains and Šance Dam and Morávka Dam in the Beskydy Mountains.
The Ostrava Area Water System is a backbone network that consists of 497 km of water pipelines, 121 water reservoirs with the capacity of 302,060 m3 and water treatment plants which can treat 4,850 litres per second. Drinking water is also supplied for towns with local sources of water.
Production and quality of drinking water are monitored in line with laws in force with the frequency and scope necessary for validation of correctness of the technology processes. Quality of drinking water is monitored not only through the laboratory analyses of samples. In the system, there are many continuous analysers which check compliance of drinking water and hot water with health limits in force. The documentation also specifies the frequency and scope of such tests.
Legislative samples of water are analysed in an accredited laboratory. Operation control samples are analysed in the operation laboratories that are located in the water treatment plants (in Podhradí u Vítkova and in Nová Ves u Frýdlantu nad Ostravicí). SmVaK has been supplying reliably drinking water of top quality.
